1/31/12 Triangle BioSystems Announces Optional Accessories For All Tethered & Wireless Headstages.
|
|
TBSI is happy to announce three new accessories for all of the tethered and wireless headstages which are outlined below:
- Head X, Y and Z Acceleration
This accelerometer PCB accessory will monitor x, y and z acceleration at the headstage and output this analog information on 3 active headstage channels. The accelerometer PCB can be mounted inside the wireless headstage or in parallel with all tethered headstages. The output data will be analog format and can be analyzed with our Neuroware software. With this headstage accessory, the animal head acceleration can be monitored and headstage velocity and position can be calculated in software.
- Temperature monitoring
A single channel of temperature monitoring can be configured with all of our headstages. This option includes one external small thermistor, placeable anywhere inside or on the animal. The thermistor option has a temperature range of 0 to 70 degrees C. The temperature data signals output analog levels and are transmitted via an active headstage channel.
- Ultrasonic sound monitoring
An ultrasound microphone option can be added to all of our headstages enabling our headstage to pick up ultrasonic frequencies between 10kHz and 30kHz frequencies. The ultrasound microphone option will work the best with the use of the 16ch wireless headstage that can sample analog channels at 100khz. However all other wireless headstages sampling at 50khz will limit the microphone bandwidth to 25khz instead of 30khz.
|
|
The electronics and control of all 3 monitor accessory options can be mounted on a single PCB that is mounted within the wireless headstage or in parallel to our tethered headstages. The size of the accessory option PCB is .5 x .7 x .2 inches and weighs .6 grams fully populated. Above is an example of the mechanical changes to a 16ch wireless headstage that has the accelerometer, thermistor and ultrasonic microphone accessory options. All of these accessory options need to be configured and specified during the ordering process and are built into the manufacturing assembly and ordering process.

3/30/11 Triangle BioSystems Announces General Availability of Our "All-New" Wireless Headstage Product Line Refresh to Include New Magnetic Power Switch.
|
Our latest versions of the TBSI wireless headstages now have a magnetic on/off switch sensor that will improve the usability and reduce setup time of the wireless system. Customers can turn the headstage on and off using a simple magnetic wand with a swiping movement very close the top surface of the wireless headstage.
A blue LED power indicator will be illuminated to indicate when the unit is turned on. By swiping the headstage again, the blue LED will indicate the headstage unit is turned off by not being present. The magnetic switch with wand actuator is now a standard feature on all channel versions of our wireless headstage products.
The magnetic switch re-design will speed up the ability for customers to turn the headstage on and off, thus saving headstage battery life. It also removes the need to handle or touch the headstage with your fingers during power on/off cycles; and improves animal handling logistics.
In addition, the headstage covering requires one less opening to further improve reliability and longevity, by reducing the risk of contamination to the headstage. Hence the only remaining opening of the headstage is for the charging connector.
|
|
If you would like to see a YouTube video of the operation of this new magnetic switch, please click HERE.
Otherwise you may visit the wireless products section of our recording products web page.

8/27/09 Clever Sys., Inc. and Triangle BioSystems, Inc. are pleased to announce a teaming agreement has been reached between Yiqing Liang, Ph.D. of Clever Sys., Inc. and James Morizio, Ph.D. of Triangle BioSystems, Inc.
|
Under this strong teaming agreement, TBSI and
CSI will work together to explore the synergy between them, and take full advantage of the
strengths of both companies, to enhance the capabilities of the technologies, and best
support advanced research by scientists.
Clever Sys., Inc. (CSI) has been providing their patented Behavioral Recognition systems
since 1999, to researchers for the study of life sciences. Using high throughput, real-time
videos, the technology is able to identify the individual body parts of the animal, and
incorporates this with temporal sequencing to determine not just where the animal is, but
WHAT the animal is doing. That is, CSI’s new generation of technology will allow for the first
time, automated analysis of lab animal’s complex, natural, and stereotypic behaviors.
Behavioral “bouts,” or events, are recorded for as long as 24 hours 7 days a week, and can
calculate down to the second what the animal was doing, and the duration. The advanced
video imaging capability allows investigators to play back any behavioral bout, giving
investigators a means for validating the results. With over 26 products on the market, and
more currently in development, researchers can rest assured there is nothing their animal
can do that CSI’s systems won’t be able to detect.
Look for the first of these integrated products to be exhibited at the Society for
Neuroscience’s 2009 annual meeting.

7/20/09 TBSI with "Frontiers in Neuroengineering"
|
TBSI’s 16ch, Gain 100 tethered headstage(P/N NEURO16BPG100) is presented
in August of 2009 “Frontiers in Neuroengineering.” Authors
John Rolston, Robert Gross, and Steve Potter from Ga. Tech present a
64ch, DAQ system for neural recording for less than $10,000 which uses 4 of the
TBSI NEURO16BPG100 headstages.
The unique benefit of the DAQ system presented is that
it recovers rapidly from stimulation and allows short
latency action potentials (<1 ms post-stimulus) to be detected,
facilitating closed-loop applications and exposing neural activity that would
otherwise remain hidden.
|
Abstract:
Commercially available data acquisition systems for multielectrode recording from freely moving
animals are expensive, often rely on proprietary software, and do not provide detailed, modifiable circuit
schematics. When used in conjunction with electrical stimulation, they are prone to prolonged,
saturating stimulation artifacts that prevent the recording of short-latency evoked responses. Yet
electrical stimulation is integral to many experimental designs, and critical for emerging brain-computer
interfacing and neuroprosthetic applications. To address these issues, we developed an easy-to-use,
modifiable, and inexpensive system for multielectrode neural recording and stimulation. Setup costs are
less than US$10,000 for 64 channels, an order of magnitude lower than comparable commercial
systems. Unlike commercial equipment, the system recovers rapidly from stimulation and allows shortlatency
action potentials (<1 ms post-stimulus) to be detected, facilitating closed-loop applications and
exposing neural activity that would otherwise remain hidden. To illustrate this capability, evoked
activity from microstimulation of the rodent hippocampus is presented. The system is modular, in banks
of 16 channels, and flexible in usage: while primarily designed for in vivo use, it can be combined with
commercial preamplifiers to record from in vitro multielectrode arrays. The system’s open-source
control software, NeuroRighter, is implemented in C#, with an easy-to-use graphical interface. As C#
functions in a managed code environment, which may impact performance, analysis was conducted to
ensure comparable speed to C++ for this application. Hardware schematics, layout files, and software
are freely available. Since maintaining wired headstage connections with freely moving animals is
difficult, we describe a new method of electrode-headstage coupling using neodymium magnets.

3/25/09 Technology Improvements TBSI announces the availability of our refreshed line of W-Series headstages. A re-design of the analog electronics within each of the headstages have enabled a much lighter and smaller package while maintaining or extending the battery life. The custom analog VLSI electronics and printed circuits boards have been re-designed with improved battery technology thus enabling a 30% size and weight reduction, better temperature stability, and increased number of channels. In addition, a new covering process is also used as an outer protective shell, which protects and seals the electronics and provides a better looking device. Our 4 Channel W-Series wireless headstage has been discontinued and replaced with a 5 Channel Wireless device. We were able to improve the design of this headstage to add an extra channel that can be used as either another reference or input signal. In addition, the battery life has more than doubled from 1 hour 2.5 hours while the headstage weight was reduced from 2.8 grams to 2.4 grams.

8/8/08 Led by Dr. Warren Meck and graduate student Ruey Cheng, the lab is beta testing our 15 channel wireless system to record single unit and local field potential data from rats while they are learning to discriminate between different signal durations. The use of psychophysical procedures of this sort allows researchers to identify ‘timing’ neurons in the brain that are associated with the different anchor durations, in Warren’s case… 4s and 16s.
|
|
Other neurons can be linked to signal onset, motor responses, or the delivery of food reward. Preliminary results suggest that the dorsal lateral striatum contains neurons that differentially respond to either the 4-s or the 16-s anchor duration, although the rat is simultaneously timing both durations on the same trial. Moreover, the firing of these ‘timing’ neurons appears to be independent of other sensory or motor events. Warren Meck's Duke University Website

2/22/08 - Today, Triangle BioSystems (TBSI) of Durham, North Carolina makes a significant product announcement to enhance tethered neural recording experiments on freely moving animals.
|
|
We are announcing our M-Series (for Multiplexer-Series) products based on customer feedback we have received that use our existing lightweight, miniaturized tethered headstages for neural recording experiments. The product has been under development for much of the past year and is a tribute to our engineering, development and manufacturing teams.
|
Specifically, this unique product will significantly reduce the number of wires required for a freely moving animal test in a tethered environment without reducing the input electrode channel count at the headstage. Our new M-Series headstage(s) and de-multiplexing receiver(s) are used with an inexpensive 10 wire cable and 10 channel commutator at the highest end that can now connect to over 200 independent channels of electrode connections! Bulky and heavy cable harnesses and expensive motorized commutators for channel counts above 32 channels are no longer needed for your behavioral experiments.
|
|
|
In fact, a single 3 wire tethered connection can connect up to 32 channels. If more channels are required beyond 32, a researcher can easily add an additional M-Series 32 channel headstage at the animal, with only 1 additional wire in the tethered cable. For example, a 64 channel, 96 channel or 128 channel M-Series headstage system will only have 4, 5 or 6 wires respectively coming off the animal thus providing for a far more lighter and mobile tethered headstage system. The maximum M-Series 224 channel system will have only 9 wires to provide great opportunities for neural experimentation at an affordable cost.
|
|
We expect the M-Series headstages to offer an affordable tethered solution for customers that have not yet moved to a wireless environment and require more channels using their low cost commutators. We are please to make the M-Series products available to the neural recording community.

1/16/08 - TBSI announces new Trade-In and Upgrade programs for existing customers to maintain product investment value.
Now, customers that have bought 4 channel and 15 channel wireless systems can trade “up” to 15 channel and 31 channel wireless systems. “We are protecting our customer’s investment with this announcement” said Mike Calarco, Sales and Marketing Director. An example of a trade-in scenario would be a customer that has bought a 15 channel wireless system last year, but now has expanded the parameters of their testing project. With the special pricing of the trade-in program, they can trade-in their 15 channel product for a brand new 31 channel wireless system. This allows customers on limited budgets to expand their testing ranges. Also available are upgrades from 16 channel tethered products to 32 channel tethered products. A future trade-in program has also been announced for customers that currently buy TBSI 8 channel tethered products so they can be confident that their investment will be protected.
The TBSI upgrade program allows customers that have purchased previous versions of our popular hardware to upgrade to a newer version of the same product to take advantage of the latest enhancements. Special pricing will allow customers on a limited budget to maintain the latest version of their favorite hardware products.
For additional information, including available trade-in and upgrade paths and pricing, please contact TBSI at 919-361-2663.
